Some random President's Day happenings

I woke this morning to my six year old singing, over and over again

"You give love.. a BAD NAME."

Later...

Case to me: Mom when are you and Dad not going to be married anymore?

Me: Well, Mommy and Daddy were married in the temple which means Heavenly Father will let us be married forever, even after we die and go to Heaven!

I say this thinking this will ease his little mind. Wrong. His face contorted into pre-cry mode and he threw himself at me in a huge hug and said "But I don't want you to die!"

Me: I won't die for a long long long long long long time. OK?

Case: Like when you're really old like Grandma? Not our Grandma in Arizona, but our Grandma in Utah. She's realllllllly old. Our Arizona Grandma is old too, I guess.

End of conversation. Off he runs.

Later...

I was sweeping the garage. Barefoot. I dropped one of the kids' scooters and the handle landed right on top of my big toe. OUCH!! It's all black and blue and swollen. And I can't bend it. Broken? Lesson: Wear shoes ya eejit!

And it's only 2 p.m. on this lovely President's Day. I'm sure more excitement awaits...

My little Princess and SuperGirl

Fisher had a buddy over last week and of ALL the boy stuff we have in the playroom, of all the cars, guns, games, dinosaurs, light sabres... this is what they choose to play with.

If Fish Could Fly...

Last week we had a great storm, complete with rain, thunder, lightning... and WIND. There was even a tornado warning/watch (whatever - did it ever actually touch down?) on Thursday night. During dinner that night Fisher got the fantastic idea to get out in that wind and FLY. His scientific brain got to working, and this was his solution.

Born in the wrong era

I want to live in Cranford.

I just finished watching two BBC movies this week (Cranford and Tess of the D'Urbervilles - one happy and lovely, the other wretchedly depressing and now I want to read both books again), both set in Victorian-ish England, and I've come to the conclusion that I was born in the wrong era. I think I would have been just fine having to wear dresses and hats all the time. And women were JUST beginning to have some independence and a voice, so I may have been OK. And they wrote! Letters!

Jarad says that if a movie doesn't have English accents, isn't based on a book by a dead English author or is not about some sort of royalty I won't watch it. I think he's probably pretty spot on. Hey, even American Idol has a Brit :).

First-grade Perspective of Civil Rights

Overheard Monday afternoon

Emma: Fisher, what's your bonus word this week?

Fisher: Segregation

Me (from the other room): Do you know what that means Fish?

F: It's a celebration of King Martin. I'm not sure who he was.

Of course an educational discussion explaining segregation, Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement ensued. But the beginning of the conversation was just priceless.

My new favorite bag

My awesome crafty and talented sister made these cute bags for all us girls for Christmas. Aren't they the cutest? She knits them a little on the bigger side, then washes them a few times to felt the yarn and shrink the bag. I'm in love and in awe!

The green one is mine and the pink is Teslin's. I couldn't wade through the piles in Emma's hovel to find her cute purple one when it was time for the photo shoot. :)

Thanks Karin! If only we lived closer, I'd have you give me a tutorial. Maybe you should video a lesson for me and put it on YouTube!! Ooh or do you have Skype? Maybe I'm on to something here...

RIP Fred: A Fish Memorial

We lost our dearly beloved fish Fred over the Christmas break. I got an email a couple of days before Christmas informing me of his passing, but I didn't tell the kids until after Christmas. Actually I only told Emma, and it was about a day before she chose a particularly inappropriate moment to tell Fisher who spent the first hour or so of our drive home in tears.

Funny, but I never thought a fish could have much of a personality, but after getting a new fish this past weekend, I'm realizing the differences between Fred and Bob.

Here's what I loved about Fred:

1. His bowl was next to our digital picture frame on our kitchen counter. We often found him swimming up next to the frame, watching as our family photos flipped from one to the next. His own personal dive-in movie. We put Bob next to the frame his first day home and he could care less. Fred knew his family.

2. Fred knew when we were around. Every time someone was in the kitchen near his bowl, whether we were about to feed him, unloading the dishwasher, making a sandwich, he would come to the edge of the bowl to watch us. And more often than not he did that freaky beta fish thing where they puff up, telling us he was in charge and we better watch our step. Bob, again, could care less. The only time we've seen him puff up is when we put a mirror next to the bowl.

3. Fred was a well-traveled fish. He came with us to Utah last summer.

For the record, the twins were unaffected by his death. They were just so excited to go to the pet store to get a new fish. But that trip to PetSmart exposed them to guinea pigs and hamsters. Ugh. That's all Tess is talking about now is getting a blasted guinea pig. Ain't gonna happen. Mark my words...

So good bye Fred the Red Fish. We loved you and we will miss you.

And welcome Bob the Blue Fish.
